The Educational Travel Consortium’s Responsible Tourism Showcase Award is open to all ETC members to nominate a project or program (member or non-member) that meets the established criteria and guidelines below. ETC’s Responsible Tourism Committee and Executive Advisory Council serve as the selection committee. The award benefits are listed below.

Please be advised that ETC retains the right to publish, in print and online, all materials submitted as part of the Responsible Tourism Honoree application. Cash recognition gifts are disbursed to the project and/or communities instituting responsible tourism initiatives and are intended to help enhance the project in some way. Applications are due by November 1, 2017.

Submission Requirements:

  • Ensure that the nomination meets the pre-requisite guidelines (see below).

  • Complete the Responsible Tourism Showcase Application online.

  • After your application is complete, e-mail the following materials to with “RT” and your project’s title in the subject line:

      • A photo or head shot of the principal of the project (high resolution, 300 dpi minimum). Please provide complete name and title as a caption.

      • Four project photos (high resolution, 300 dpi minimum).  Please provide identifying captions  with the photos.  These photos may be published on the ETC website as well as in the Community Resource Directory provided to paid attendees of the annual conference.  If any release forms are required for publication, please submit authorization in writing at time of submission.

      • A video of the project. The film clip, 3 minute maximum, should be high quality because it may be shown at the Annual Conference via a projector from a laptop.  Voice-overs and/or music should be recorded in a soundproof room.

        All project applications are evaluated on their strength in meeting the following award criteria:

        • Making positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage areas and involving the local community/residents in decisions.

        • Generating greater economic benefits for local communities while minimizing negative economic, environmental, and social impact.

        • Providing enjoyable and educational experiences for visitors that engender respect between them and the natural and cultural environments.

        • Offering a strong community-based tourism component and other significant efforts in responsible tourism.

        Application Prerequisite Guidelines:

        • The individual, company, or organization making a nomination must be a member of ETC.

        • The project nominee must have been operational for at least one year and must be market-ready to accept and provide services for educational travel groups and/or FIT clients.

        • The nominee must offer a strong program demonstrating admirable environmental, cultural, educational, and/or volunteerism principles.

        Benefits to Responsible Tourism Showcase Honorees:

        • $1,000 monetary award for the first honoree recipient to support the enhancement of the nominated program, project, or product. Additional monetary awards may be given to the runner-up honorees pending the availability of funds from year-to-year.

        • Recognition at a conference Plenary session. If a representative for the honoree(s) cannot attend the annual conference, its best practices will still be featured at the event.

        • Year-round website recognition with the winner’s contact information and a link to the winner’s website, if available.
