2017 RESPONSIBLE TOURISM HONOREE
Golden Eagle Hunter’s Association (Berkut)
The annual Golden Eagle Festival was founded as a way to preserve and celebrate western Mongolia’s Kazakh hunters’ tradition of training and hunting with golden eagles.
Held in the rugged Altai Mountains of western Mongolia, the festival is a colorful community celebration with a competition testing speed, agility, and accuracy, as well as performances and a parade. It has become the second most popular festival in Mongolia.
While eagle hunting is centuries-old, the Kazakh community had dwindled dramatically. Faced with the challenge of preserving this ancient tradition, Jalsa Urubshurow from Nomadic Expeditions founded the nonprofit Golden Eagle Hunters Association (Berkut Association) and the festival as a way to celebrate this competition, grow pride, and increase commitment.
$1,000 monetary award for the first honoree recipient to support the enhancement of the nominated program, project, or product. Additional monetary awards of up to $500 each may be given to second and third place runner-up honorees pending the availability of funds from year to year, recognition at ETC’s Global Gathering, and online year-round website recognition with the winner’s contact information and a link to the winner’s website, if available.
